Redevelopment of New Holland Island in St Petersburg Unveiled

On the 9th of June New Holland Development (NHD) announced that it is preparing a new, updated plan for the restoration and reconstruction of New Holland Island, which has been developed by West 8.
The introduction of the Summer at New Holland program in 2011-2013, highlighted the necessity for creating a park area and recreational infrastructure on the island. In light of this, NHD invited landscape design specialists WEST8 to develop an updated master plan, following on the initial plan developed by NHD and WorkAC. A new development plan for the island is now being drafted by West 8 together with New Holland Development, which includes a full-scale park zone along the Admiralty Canal and the territory surrounding the island’s internal water features.
The new plan is based on respect for the existing monumental buildings and their potential for new and revised programming. It proposes a range of suitable programs that will breathe new social and economic vitality into the buildings and the city of St. Petersburg. It also pays homage to the existing building structures and reinforces the concept of a revitalized public park environment.
Under the new plan, the construction period will be divided into several phases in order to accelerate public access to one of the city’s most popular landmarks. St. Petersburg’s residents and tourists will be able to visit the island anew by the end of 2015.
Founded in 2010, New Holland Development (NHD) was created for the explicit purpose of developing a proposal for the island of New Holland. On November 15, 2010, the company officially won the right to redevelop the island, as awarded by the municipal administration of the city of St Petersburg, with the goal of further restoration and preservation of the architectural monuments on the island.
