West 8 Urban Design and Landscape Architecture

West 8's design for the Park at Essex Crossing was appproved by the Manhattan’s Community Board 3 Parks Committee on November 19th. The design provides a refined, shaded oasis in the heart of Manhattan’s Lower East Side. 

On the 9th of October Sweco + West 8 + Cerau were awarded the contract for the redevelopment of the Place Royale. Built between 1775 -1782, it has played an important role in the rise of the city of Brussels. West 8, Grontmij, and Cerau's winning design creates a welcoming and elegant pedestrian realm that enhances the architectural heritage of the Place Royale.

Colwell Shelor + West 8 + Weddle Gilmore's design for Mesa City Center has been unanimously selected by the City of Mesa as the winning design proposal from a shortlist of three finalists. 

The Federal Constitutional Court of Germany was officially opened on the 12th of November 2014. Developed from West 8’s 2011 winning competition entry the surrounding landscape has been transformed from a fragmented and featureless space, into a lush green landscape of the highest quality.

The Passerelle Roosendaal and the new Kellebeek College were officially opened on 13th of November by Mayor Niederer of Roosendaal during a festive ceremony.

We are pleased to announce that Adriaan Geuze, Director of West 8, has been invited to join The Cultural Landscape Foundation's (TCLF) Stewardship Council. Comprised of selected practitioners and respected individuals, the Stewardship Council is tasked with raising awareness of TCLF mission of "stewardship through education."

The Miami Beach Design Review Board unanimously approved the design for the Miami Beach Convention Center and Convention Center Public Spaces, including a new signature six-acre Public Park and Park Pavilion designed by West 8. 

West 8 will present a joint session on "21st Century Stewardship for Master Landscapes" at the Annual Meeting and EXPO of the American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA) in Denver, Colorado on Sunday the 23rd of November.

Edzo Bindels, partner at West 8, presents Madrid Rio At the ARCAM, Amsterdam. The evening is being organized within the framework of the Week of the City 2015, which has Amsterdam’s A10 ring road as its main theme. 

Martin Biewenga, partner at West 8, will speak at the 2014 AKRIMEET, a two day conference dedicated to sustaining better architectural practice, enhancing architectural culture and raising the quality of built environment within Turkey. 

On 18th of October, the annual Dutch Design Awards were presented in the Klokgebouw in Eindhoven. This year prizes were awarded in six categories. Rotterdam Centraal, designed by Team CS (a cooperation between Benthem Crouwel Architects, MVSA Meyer en Van Schooten Architects and West 8) won the Dutch Design Award 2014 in category HABITAT.

On 15th October the jury of the International Brunel Awards Competition 2014 announced the winners of the 12th edition of the Brunel Awards during the Watford Conference in Amsterdam. Rotterdam Centraal Station won the award for outstanding railway architecture design in the Category I, Station Buildings, which included 43 entries from over 13 different countries.

The process of design combines creativity with historical knowledge and interest in the new. The winter lecture series - 90 minuten, will explore such themes with lectures by a series of international practitioners. West 8's lecture on the 21st of October marks the beginning of the winter programme.

Rotterdam Centraal has been announced as the winner of both the Dutch 'Nationale Staalprijs' (National Steel Award) and the 'Houtarchitectuurprijs' (Wood Architecture Award) in the Non-Residential Construction category. The awards was presented to Team CS, a cooperation between Benthem Crouwel Architects, MVSA Meyer en Van Schooten Architecten and West 8 on 2nd and 7th of October respectively.

West 8 to present at Urbanism Week 2014, which runs from the 6th to the 10th of October. Addressing the theme of ‘The Scale Factor’ this annual event will bring together (international) speakers, designers and planners, to give lectures and workshops at TU Delft.  

The Jury Meeting for the second stage of FIZ Future Design Competition, organized by the BMW Group in close cooperation with the City of Munich, took place in Munich on 25th of September, 2014. Chaired by architect Kaspar Kraemer, the jury awarded prizes to only three of the six finalists. West 8 urban design & landscape architecture with Atelier Kempe Thill was awarded third place. First and second place went to HENN (Germany, Munich) and andernst niklaus fausch Architekten (Switzerland, Zurich) respectively.

The Dreaming Big exhibition examines the passionate discussions and debates around Toronto’s love affair with the water’s edge. It features six visionary ideas about the future of the Gardiner Expressway including West 8’s design for Queen’s Quay, which is currently under construction. 

Three firms; Beyer Blinder Belle + West 8 + Fluidity are responsible for the US$90-million restoration and renovation of the 83-year-old Main Fountain Garden at Longwood Gardens in Philadelphia, US. The “New Heights: The Fountain Revitalization Project,” will add new infrastructure, public spaces and innovative design elements that honor the visionary original design by Longwood Gardens founder Pierre S. du Pont.

Winner of Gulangyu Island Landscape Masterplan Concept Design solicitation procedure, West 8 will be working closely with the Xiamen People's Goverment and other related bodies to enhance the urban design and landscape quality of this unique island in Southern China. Facilitating Gulangyu Island's application for achieving World Heritage, UNESCO status.

The Living Daylight Foundation has given out its fourth 'Daylight Award' during the Light Congress 2014 which took place at the World Forum, The Hague on 22nd September. The new Rotterdam Centraal by Team CS, the design result of a cooperation between Benthem Crouwel Architects, MVSA Meyer, van Schooten Architects and West 8, was announced the winner of the Daylight Award 2014 during the ceremony.
