West 8 Urban Design and Landscape Architecture

Both the Golden Phoenix and the StiB were awarded to Rotterdam Centraal District on Wednesday, 4th of June. The jury of the Golden Phoenix praised the way in which Rotterdam Centraal "has effectively cut the Gordian knot of travel, traffic and public transport".

Six years in the making, 30 acres of new park and public space on Governors Island are open to the public. The West 8 NY team was there to witness the spectacle. 

Amsterdam Pakhuis de Zwijger organises a lecture series titled, Water Republic in 2025. The aim of the lecture program is to build and develop a sustainable water community in Amsterdam. As part of the series, Adriaan Geuze shared his vision for water mangement at a public lecture on the 28th of May.

On Saturday, 24th May 24 at 2pm the Vlinderhof at Máximapark was officially opened by Mr. Kees Geldof, the new councilor for both public and green space of Vleuten - De Meern. Mr. Geldof performed the opening ceremony, with Adriaan Geuze of West 8, and Piet Oudolf, the designer of the Vlinderhof.

Madrid RIO, has just been announced as one of 5 finalists nominated for the Urban Developments & Initiatives award, one of three sub-categories in the 2014 Zumtobel Group Awards.

On Tuesday the 19th of May West 8 was presented with the Global Award for Sustainable Architecture™ by LOCUS at the Cite de l'Architecture & du Patrimoine Paris. 2014 is the 8th edition of the Awards, which received the patronage of UNESCO in 2011. 

On Saturday, May 17th the new Wenduine bridge was opened for the public. The bridge, an example of an integrated and sustainable coastal development project provides a safe crossing for all users.

On Tuesday 20th of May West 8 Director, Edzo Bindels will present a lecture about 'The Street as a Social Space', as part of the Rotterdam Academy of Architecture's Streetwise program.

On the 9th of May West 8 together with Atelier Kempe Thill and five other firms were announced as finalists for the second phase of the BMW FIZ Future urban planning competition in Munich, Germany. 

West 8 Belgium Director, Maarten van de Voorde discusses the spatial decomposition of infrastructure with other industry experts at the "Infrastructure in the City'' conference in Antwerp.

A new video by Waterfront Toronto takes in-depth look at the work above and below ground on Queens Quay. Detailing the transformation of Toronto's main waterfront street from uninspiring thoroughfare to a beautiful waterfront boulevard. 

On Wednesday 23rd April, the nominations for the 2014 StiB (Steden in Beweging = Cities in Motion) award were officially announced. Rotterdam Central District is one of four projects nominated for this award, which recognises the most successful examples of urban renewal in the Netherlands. Projects are selected for their distinctive contribution to the vitality and dynamism of the city. 

Rotterdam Central District and Business Park Kleefse Waard have been announced as the two finalists for the 2014 Area Transformation Award. One of four award categories in this year's Golden Phoenix NRP Awards. Both projects have been designed by West 8 in collaboration with other offices. 

On the 22nd of April The Presidio Trust, in conjunction with the Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy and the National Park Service announced that Team West 8 is one of five renowned design firms invited to develop conceptual design and programming for 10 acres of new parkland atop a dramatic bluff with panoramic Golden Gate views within San Francisco's Presidio. 

The Footbridge at Roosendaal Station celebrated a construction milestone during the Easter weekend, with the completion of the third section of the bridge assembly. The careful positioning of three bridge segments was so successful that this critical step was completed ahead of schedule.

On the 5th of April 2014, West 8 spoke at Punto de Encuentro ("Meeting Point"), the closing event of the 13th (inter)National Congress of the Architects of Panama.  The 2013-2014 congress explored notions of (re)contextualizing in the field of architecture and questioned what instruments of cohesion and communication can be used to connect architecture and society. 

After months of research and working alongside communities in the Sandy affected region, team WXY/West 8 unveils their “The Blue Dunes” project, an innovative approach to coastal protection in the final stage of the Rebuild by Design Competition.

On March 19 the Provincial Government, Waterfront Toronto and designers LANDinc and West 8 revealed updated design plans for a new urban park and waterfront trail at Ontario Place at the project's third public consultation. 

On the 14th of March the 2014 Light- S project at Strijp S was officially opened by Alderman Mary-Ann Schreurs.  The opening ceremony took place on Torenallee 20, with light and dark formed a central theme of the evening, which included a review of recently realized lighting projects at Strijp S.

His Majesty King Willem-Alexander officially opened the new Rotterdam Centraal Station on Thursday 13th March. During his tour through the station the king was addressed by Team CS. Mayor Aboutaleb, Marion Gout – van Sinderen (CEO of Prorail), Secretary of State Wilma Mansveld, Boukje Bügel (CEO retail & transfer NS) and alderman of the City of Rotterdam Jeanette Baljeu also accompanied his Majesty on his tour.
