West 8 Urban Design and Landscape Architecture

On 4th February, the Guangzhou Municipal Government announces that West 8's entry as No 1 of the two winners of the Guangzhou Fangcun Huadi Sustainable Master Plan competition.

Adriaan Geuze is invited by Georgia Tech School of Architecture, Atlanta, to present as lecturer of this year's Douglas C. Allen Lecture.

On 14th Feb 2013, in section V of the Dutch national paper "de Volkskrant" an overview is presented of the development of Strijp S, based on an interview with Adriaan Geuze. This news item brings you some images and updates of the project.

Rotterdam Central Station gets the original illuminated letters 'CENTRAAL STATION' back on the facade. This memorable moment of the re-illuminating the characters will take place on Thursday, 7th of March at 18:30-19:00.

On the 18th of February, West 8, represented by Clair Agre, will join Longwood Gardens and Lord Cultural Resources to present a broadminded approach towards strategic, fiscal, and physical master planning. Titled “Creating a Culture of Planning and Leadership.”

During the week Jan 14 - 20, 2013, Adriaan Geuze lectured at the University of Virginia’s School of Architecture, as a Jaquelin T. Robertson Visiting Professor this year. He was the guest leader of the ALL-SCHOOL WORKSHOP AND COMPETITION 2.0, titled: 'The Rivanna River Vortex'.

Adriaan Geuze can be seen in the documentary 'Golden Age' series, on channel Nederland 2. Episode 6: A MAKABLE COUNTRY. He speaks about how rich merchants of this water land has made a small paradise during the Golden Age of Ducth history.

On the 19th of December it was announced by Fort Mason Center that West 8 has won the design competiton for the 5.3 hectare waterfront campus in San Francisco. In their design West 8 calls for seven key strategies that bolster and preserve Fort Mason’s legacy and military identity while activating the water’s edge.

Blok C, Wandeloord of the project Nieuw Crooswijk has been nominated for the Rotterdam Architectuurprijs Rotterdam. The residents of Rotterdam have the opportunity to choose the winner of the Public Award.

Joris Weijts, architect and project leader at West 8, is to speak on public spaces and Governors Island at Fondazione of Sandretto Re Rebaudeng.

16 November 2012, the official launch of Queen's Quay construction took place. The Queen's Quay construction will transform Toronto's main waterfront street and is part of the overall Masterplan of Toronto Central Waterfront.

The first of many deliveries at Rotterdam Central Station took place 10 November. The passage at Rotterdam Central Station has been re-opened to the public. At 11am it was officially opened by Patrick Buck, director of Prorail, Jeannette Baljeu, alderman at the municipality of Rotterdam, and Michiel Noy director of NS.

Dossier West 8 by AV Proyectos is in store now, featuring 8 recent projects by West 8. So far, only two other international firms had an issue dedicated to them, it's an honour to be the third.

Her Majesty the Queen, Elizabeth II, visited Jubilee Gardens on London's Southbank to officially open the new gardens on the 25th of October. A plaque was unveiled to commemorate her visit to the Gardens which were completed just in time for the Queen's Diamond Jubilee last May.

The 10th of November, the transformed passage at Rotterdam Central Station will re-open to the public. Wider and higher than the former passage, it will become a true experience for travellers passing by the station.

On 10th October 2012, West 8 - in association with Speirs + Major | Designers working with light - has been announced the winner of the Lighting Master Plan for the future urban development Kruunuvuorenranta in Helsinki. Our Luonnon Lyhdyt "Natural Lanterns" entry will share 1st prize with "Into the Light" of Team Bartenbach.

TV META/SW/Technum in collaboration with West 8 wins the Design Competition for the O building at the University of Antwerp. West 8 will act as consultant on the Masterplan of the campus area.

West 8's architect Juan Figueroa Calero to speak on 'Second Nature' at the IFLA Americas Region Conference "Borders: Landscapes on the Alert" on 18th October.

September was a month full of activities at the Schouwburgplein. As part of the revitalisation the square is undergoing, a square manager has been appointed by neighbouring cultural institutes, and the festivities are brought back to the square.
