West 8 Urban Design and Landscape Architecture

On May 25th, phase 1 of Columbia Circle in Shanghai was festively opened. The site was revitalized with the joint effort of OMA, West 8, local architects ECADI and local landscape architects LANDAU.

On May 12, the Toronto Jack Layton Ferry Terminal opened for the season. To ensure access to the Toronto Islands this summer, the construction of Phase 1A of the Harbour Square Park promenade is paused until October.

Consortium Ballast will help to elaborate and build West 8’s design of bridge over Wilhelminakanaal at Moorland, Oirschot City, construction will start in the third season of 2018.

West 8’s ‘pollinator garden’ is the winner of the design competition to upgrade the northern section of Bernie Spain Gardens on London’s South Bank, announced on 10 May 2018. 

The construction of 't Zand Square in Bruges is advancing swiftly. On Sunday the 6th of May, the site was temporarily opened to the public, providing a glimpse of the future appearance of the square. 

The design for the reinforcement of the Afsluitdijk has been presented to the media. West 8 is the Landscape Architect of Levvel’s Design Team.

On April 18, the most recent plan for the improvement of Zernike Campus Groningen was revealed. The bike and pedestrian friendly design builds upon West 8’s master plan originated from 1999.

As one of the experts for North Carolina cultural landscape, Claire Agre showed participants of the TCLF Research Triangle's tours how to re-discover the design history of places they pass every day including: Duke University West Campus (DURHAM).

The Prime Minister of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, Mr Mark Rutte paid an official visit to Hong Kong on 8 and 9 April 2018. During his visit, Mr. Rutte paid a field visit to West Kowloon Cultural District Park, a design by West 8 in collaboration with local partners Dennis Lau & Ng Chun Man Architects & Engineers, and Acardis HK.

Friday April 20, the German Architecture Museum will open its latest exhibition, regarding the importance of integrating cyclists into the design of our cities. West 8 will exhibit Madrid Rio as an example for successful bicycle-friendly urban and landscape design. 

West 8 New York Creative Director / Liaison, Daniel Vasini joined the discussion panel Development_REshape - "Cities within Cities" commenced on March 25. This panel aimed to examine future trends and the next wave of transformational projects that are currently being contemplated.

On Thursday morning March 29, 2018, His Majesty King Willem-Alexander symbolically opened the Green Carpet in Maastricht. West 8 has been responsible for the urban master plan and landscape design for The Green Carpet since 2009.

The project team of Longwood Gardens Main Fountain has just been awarded one of the Philadelphia Preservation Alliance’s 2018 Preservation Grand Jury Awards. 

The first images of the new design for the iconic Afsluitdijk have been released. This was done after Rijkswaterstaat's announcement that Levvel (a joint venture of Van Oord, BAM en Rebel) was awarded the commission to reinforce the dike. 

Longwood's Main Fountain Garden is crowned as winning project in the category of “Public Spaces: Parks Plazas Gardens Streetscapes” of the 17th annual Palladio Design Awards, the only US national awards that recognize excellence in traditional architecture, interior design, landscape architecture and traditional craftsmanship.

After years of tug-of-war about what was to come on this empty square, the site of the Olympic Stadium in Amsterdam Zuid, is now being transformed into a lively new city square for Amsterdam: Stadionplein, a design by West 8 in collaboration with Municipality of Amsterdam Southern District. It will be renamed as 'Johan Cruijffplein', after a born-and-bred Amsterdammer, famous footballer and coach Johan Cruijff.

Construction of the Jack Layton Ferry Terminal and the Harbour Square Park in Toronto is currently under way. The new verdant area will be a counterbalance to urban life and a welcoming gateway to the Toronto Islands.

After 1,5 years of construction, the first section of the waterfront promenade at the West Kowloon Cultural District Art Park in Hong Kong is since late Janurary 2018, the Chinese New Year period, open to public. Many visitors have come during the Chinese holiday season to watch the sunset, run, cycle, and walk while enjoying picture-perfect views.

On the 22nd of February 2018, prof. ir. Adriaan Geuze, Special Professor of Landscape Architecture at Wageningen University, will present his inaugural address, entitled 'The Three Souls of Landscape'.
