West 8 Urban Design and Landscape Architecture

On 2 November 2017 West 8 presented a first set of sketches and scenario's for the future of Grave, a small fortified town in Noord-Brabant, famous for being the most besieged city of The Netherlands. 250 residents joined the 'Talk of the town', a debate about the city's future. 

West 8 is pleased to be invited to participate in 2017 Shanghai Urban Space Art Season (SUSAS) main exhibition pavilion and subsequent activities.

Recent completion of St Petersburg’s New Holland Island phase 2 of the Bottle House adds a tint of commercial experience with West 8's design of its inner courtyard with a Small Stage by Ludi Architects.

The four entries were unveiled on Thursday October 5 afternoon during a public viewing. Citizens of Ottawa are encouraged to express their opinion on all entries until midnight October 18, 2017.

Writers, poets, thinkers and designers celebrate and analyse the richness of the Dutch landscape on the occasion of the 180th anniversary edition of the literary magazine De Gids. Author and philosopher Dirk van Weelden and West 8's Adriaan Geuze will discuss about 'What is the Landscape of the Netherlands?' in an lecture at HNI Rotterdam.

Thursday 05 October, Archipel presents ‘Architecture as fossilized music’ within the Concert Hall season theme ‘Metamorphosis: transformations /adjustments in Bruges’. Music and Architecture! West 8 joins the event presenting the Revitalisation of 't Zand project. 

After the conceptual design stage presented in mid 2017, West 8 has further developed the proposed urban design strategy for Zhangjiang Northwest District Urban Upgrade. It is positively perceived and has become a demonstrative project for the redevelopment of the rest of the Zhangjiang Innovative District. Derieved from this master plan, a landscape sub-project Zhangjiang Innopark is now being developed.

The upcoming International Conference at Vienna University of Technology will commence on 28-29 Sep 2017. Edzo Bindels will showcase West 8's stellar projects from Rotterdam to Toronto, sharing success in reframing urban space and debates about how to deal with the last remaining reserves of urban land.

On the 13th of September 2017, Queens Quay Boulevard was awarded a Toronto Urban Design Award of Excellence. The jury expresses its admiration: "Design set a new precedent for North American urban design".

On Sunday 03 Sep 2017, was the festive opening of West 8's new bridge of Noorderpark. The 150m long bridge is the first of two bridges to connect the Volewijkspark with the Florapark, combining both into one Noorderpark.

West 8 New York's principal Claire Agre wrote a blogpost about our work at Longwood Gardens. She reflects on designing Longwood's masterplan and working on the grand Main Fountain Garden revitalization.

The first sections of pavement have been laid on top of the double layered tunnel in Maastricht. It means that the realization of the Groene Loper (Green Carpet) has proceeded to the next stage. 

West 8's Governors Island Park project is listed as a finalist in the category of Park/Public Space of Surface Travel Awards — an annual tribute to the best and most thoughtfully conceived design.

West 8 in association with ASTOC Architects & Planners and SHP Ingenieure was commissioned in 2016 as the expert team for the urban planning of Kronsberg-Süd, Hanover's largest residential planning being undertaken currently and will provide new housing for 9,000 residents. Project is proceeding smoothly with the construction estimated to start from 2018.

While construction work on one of Bruges’ biggest squares is still underway, part of a historical ‘rei’ has already been revealed to the public. 

Recently, the first phase of construction of the airport terminal’s forecourt and arrival/departure area has started. Adriaan Geuze has played an instrumental role in the masterplanning process for the airport extention.

The design for Tverskaya Zastava Square has been revealed. Led by Adriaan Geuze, West 8´s team has been working with Strelka KB to revitalize the square by optimizing the use of space and prioritizing pedestrian connections. 

A floating crane lifted a 34 meter long bridge section into place across the Noordhollandsch Kanaal. West 8's new 150m bridge is the first of two bridges to connect the Volewijkspark with the Florapark, combining both into one Noorderpark.

When we designed the park and public space of Governors Island we could only dream that within such short time the island would bring together so many people to play, laugh, discover, love, and relax.
