PM - Toronto Harbour Landing opens for season
18-05-2018

On May 12, the Jack Layton Ferry Terminal at the Toronto Waterfront opened for the season. The terminal is the main gateway to the Toronto Islands, one of the city’s most cherished places. Toronto Waterfront and the City of Toronto decided to pause the construction of phase 1A until autumn to provide full ferry access. The promenade gives visitors an idea of the future development of the site. Once complete, Harbour Landing will be a welcoming gateway to the islands across the bay. Both the park and the terminal were designed by West 8, KPMB Architects and Greenberg Consultants.

During previous months, the entrance promenade with the characteristic Waterfront granite mosaic paving could be nearly brought to completion: 20 meters remain unfinished until construction picks up in October. Also, custom designed lighting was installed and 10 new maple trees were planted in protective silva cells along the entrance promenade. Leading up to the Jack Layton Memorial Statue, a set of stairs and a pathway were created. Grading and drainage were improved as well to provide a better view of the lake from Queens Quay Boulevard and Bay Street.

Along with the completion of the granite paving, construction crews will plant six remaining trees and install a set of benches at the terminal after the season will have ended, thus completing phase 1A. Throughout Harbour Square Park, bespoke Toronto Waterfront lamps, which are characteristic of the Masterplan, will find their places and contribute to the creation of a better atmosphere.

The project is getting realized in phases, as funding becomes available. Read more about the construction progress here
